Pilot Path

How to Become a Pilot

Every step, every cost, every shortcut — laid out so nothing feels impossible.

Before you start training

Student Pilot Certificate — free from FAA at IACRA.faa.gov. Required before solo flight. Non-U.S. students: check your country's equivalent through your national CAA.
FAA Medical Certificate — 3rd Class for PPL costs $100–$150. Get this early to confirm eligibility before investing in training.
Minimum Age — 16 to solo powered aircraft, 17 to earn your PPL. Ground school and simulator training can start at any age.
English Proficiency — ICAO Level 4 English required for international certificates (conversational level).

The cheapest ways to build hours

Civil Air Patrol — free flight hours for cadets ages 12–20 that count toward FAA certificates. Best starting point in the U.S.
Flying clubs — monthly dues instead of per-hour rates. Saves 30–50% over standalone aircraft rentals.
Community college programs — FAA-approved training at 40–70% lower cost. Pell Grant and financial aid eligible.
Approved simulators (AATD) — up to 20 hrs can replace aircraft time at $40–70/hr vs. $130–180/hr in a real airplane.
Step 01 — PPL
Private Pilot License
PPL / Private Pilot Certificate
Your entry point. Fly solo or with passengers in good weather. The same fundamental certificate worldwide — FAA or ICAO/EASA rules apply depending on country.
Min. Flight Hours40 hrs (avg 55–65)
Cost (USA)$8,000–$15,000
Time to Complete4–12 months
Min. Age17 (FAA) / 17 (EASA)
Cheapest path: Civil Air Patrol → community college aviation program with financial aid = $6,000–$9,000 total
Step 02 — IR
Instrument Rating
IR / IFR — All-Weather Flight
Fly through clouds and low visibility using instruments alone. Required before CPL. Dramatically expands when and where you can fly, and makes you a far safer pilot.
Instrument Hours40 hrs actual/simulated
Sim Hours AllowedUp to 20 hrs in AATD
Cost Range$8,000–$12,000
PrerequisitePPL + 50 hrs XC
Save ~$2,500: Use an AATD simulator for 20 of your 40 required instrument hours instead of aircraft time
Step 03 — CPL
Commercial Pilot License
CPL — Paid Flying Begins
Legally allows you to be compensated as a pilot. Opens charter, cargo, tours, banner towing, CFI work, and builds toward airlines while earning an income.
Total Hours250 hrs (Part 141: 190)
PIC Hours100 hrs required
Cost from Zero$30,000–$60,000
Time from PPL1–2 additional years
Earn while you build: Get a CFI rating after CPL — teach students at $40–$60/hr while building hours toward ATP at zero net cost
Step 04 — ATP
Airline Transport Pilot
ATP / ATPL — The Top Certificate
Required to captain a commercial airline. The highest pilot certificate. Required for Pilot in Command on any aircraft operated under air carrier rules with 10+ seats.
Total Hours1,500 (1,000 for military)
Min. Age23 (USA) / 21 with aviation degree
First Officer Pay$60,000–$120,000
Captain Pay$130,000–$350,000+
Airline cadet programs: Delta Propel, United Aviate, American, Southwest, and JetBlue offer tuition reimbursement + guaranteed interviews

Frequently Asked Questions

I have no money at all. What's my first move?
Request a free EAA Young Eagles flight at eaa.org — 100% free for ages 8–17. Then join Civil Air Patrol (free, ages 12–20) where cadets earn real flight hours at zero cost. These two steps launch your aviation journey before spending a dollar.
I'm outside the USA. What options exist?
Check the ICAO Fellowship Programme (all ICAO member states), EAA Ray Scholarship (international students at US/Canada schools), WAI scholarships (some open internationally), Pilot Flight Academy Norway (European passport holders), and IATA scholarships (global). Also contact your national civil aviation authority — many countries have domestic aviation funding programs.
Do I need a good GPA for aviation scholarships?
Most aviation scholarships focus on passion and community involvement over GPA. AOPA, EAA, and OBAP explicitly prioritize aviation commitment. If your grades aren't perfect, write a genuine, specific essay about why you want to fly. Passion consistently beats a 4.0 in aviation scholarship decisions.
Community college or private flight school?
For lower-income students, community college aviation programs are usually the best option. Same FAA certificates at 50–70% lower cost, with Pell Grant and financial aid eligibility. Airlines care about hours, checkride record, and attitude — not where you trained. Many successful airline captains started at community colleges.
Can I apply to multiple scholarships at once?
Yes — and you should. Most aviation scholarships have no exclusivity requirement. Write one excellent personal essay about your aviation story, then adapt it for each application. Students who apply to 6+ scholarships have dramatically higher success rates than those who apply to one or two.
How long does it take — zero to airline pilot?
Fastest realistic path: 4–6 years. Years 1–2: PPL, Instrument, Commercial, and CFI ratings. Years 2–4: Instruct students to build 1,500 hours toward ATP. Years 4–6: Hired at a regional airline as First Officer. Military path is similar timeline but at zero out-of-pocket cost.
I have a disability. Can I still fly?
Many disabilities do not prevent flying. The Able Flight program specifically funds training for people with physical disabilities. Corrected vision (glasses/contacts) is allowed at all certificate levels. First step: see an Aviation Medical Examiner to confirm eligibility before investing in training.
